Friendly’s Girl Scouts Thin Mints™ Cookie Ice Cream Cake

Friendly’s Girl Scouts Thin Mints™ Cookie Ice Cream Cake Brings Together Two American Favorites

Wilbraham, Mass., April 20, 2011 -- Friendly’s introduces the Friendly’s Girl Scouts Thin Mints™ Cookies Ice Cream Cake. Under a new license agreement with Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA), the ice cream experts at Friendly’s have created a frozen confection that incorporates the top-selling Girl Scout Cookie variety—Thin Mints.

Friendly’s premium chocolate ice cream with chunks of Girl Scout Thin Mints™ brand cookies and a crunchy Girl Scout Thin Mints™ cookie center is covered with rich chocolate truffle. The entire cake is then topped with more Girl Scout Thin Mints™ cookie chunks and a crisscross drizzle of fudge.

“We are very excited to introduce this delicious dessert that combines two of America’s best loved treats – Girl Scout Thin Mints and Friendly’s ice cream,” said Tim Hopkins, Friendly’s Executive Vice President, Retail and Manufacturing.

“Girl Scouts is pleased to be working with Friendly’s to expand awareness of our organization to grocery store shoppers, and Girl Scout Cookie aficionados will now have a new way to enjoy their favorite treat,” said Barry Horowitz, GSUSA’s Vice President and General Manager, Girl Scout Merchandise.

Friendly’s Girl Scouts Thin Mints Cookie Cake will be available at all Friendly’s restaurants and select retail locations beginning in April.

Cookie Bake-Off Finalist

Meet the finalist and winners of our first Cookie Bake-off!

On Saturday January 15th entrants in the Girl Scout Cookie Bake-off gathered at the Cherry Hill Service Center (CHSC) to share their desserts, creatively made with Girl Scout Cookies. Although it was a tough choice, contest judges narrowed down the competition from ten semifinalists to three, who would go on the final round of competition. On January 22nd three finalist gathered to make their desserts at the CHSC and present them the a panel of judges, which included Mary E. Connell our CEO; Rhonda Holland, GSCSNJ Board Member; Toni Walton, owner and baker for Sweet T’s Bakeshop and former cake decorator at Carlo’s Bakery; and  Sumiyyah Harvey, Manager at the Cherry Hill Cheesecake Factory.

First place went to the team of Kelly McVeigh and Mia Mancini who created a delicious Peanut Butter Pattie Pie made from Peanut Butter Patties and Peanut Butter Sandwiches. Kelly and Mia are both Girl Scout Brownies from the Marlton Service Unit who love cooking and baking.  Both girls have taken cooking classes and are always getting together to make new dishes to emulate their favorite television show such as “Cake Boss” and “Chopped.” Their spin on a Peanut Butter Pie was not only mouthwatering, but it looked delectable. Kelly and Mia’s clever use of Girl Scout Cookies and visual presentation made their dessert rise to the top.

Girl Scout Daisies Jessica Herstein of Marlton Service Unit and Erin Eckert of the New Brunswick Service Unit were the two runners up. Jessica made a very refreshing Thin Mint Nanaimo Bar. Jessica was inspired to make a Girl Scout Cookie version of the Nanaimo Bars, which are famous in Canada, because her mom is Canadian. Erin baked a scrumptious Coconutty Caramel deLite Pie, using Caramel deLite Cookies in the crust and as a topping. It is easy to tell that Erin’s favorite cookie is the Caramel deLite because her dessert incorporated the creamy “coconutty” flavor from the first bite to the last crumb.

Cookies, Technology and Girl Scouting in the 21st Century!!!

Well, girls, it all gets back to technology, doesn’t it? And if you have been following my blogs, you know that I am personally, and we are collectively, trying to keep up with all that is new (every day!!!!) in technology and on the information highway!!

So for our Council and for you, this means that we are using technology for every aspect of our operations, communications and, yes, now the cookie program! Now when I sold cookies as a Girl Scout in New York City “a while” back, we went door-to-door…in apartment buildings! In recent years, the “cookie booth” came into vogue as a good, efficient and safe way to have contact with the most number of people in a neighborhood. Now, in 2010, YOU have the opportunity to market, advertise, and promote the cookie program online – NOT to sell cookies, but to get the word out and take orders – all sales still have to be transacted in-person.

To find out more about this, check out the 411 On Online Marketing and Safety-Wise Learn about “Online Marketing for Girl Scout Product Activities” – must do’s, can do’s, cannot do’s and a “virtual vocab”.

This is all new and is a great opportunity for you to take your tech skills and combine them with your Girl Scout marketing knowledge on the cookie product and program…that will most likely result in increasing your orders and actual sales. I know you have all planned a budget around your anticipated activities this year and I hope that you successfully meet your budget goals. Remember also, that the cookie sale supports the Council as we provide literally hundreds of programs, trainings and camp activities for all of you!

Best of luck and best wishes for 2010!
